It’s another good old-fashioned New Years loft jam at Asterisk this year with your friends music and free beer. The little live room up front starts off with The Epochs, whose intricate workings of catchy songs are the most appropriate way to begin the new year that we can think of. Then Taylor McFerrin steps to the stage to blow everyone away with his one-man-band schtick that takes the Tom Jones and Squarepusher out of Jamie Lidell and replaces it with a subtle twist of breaky 70s funk fusion. Then Zigmat takes the stage in all of their bullhorn-blowing glory.

In the back room, where it’s dark and tiny, New Years gets a little harrier. Justin Carter and Probus rock everything from deep, dirty electro to funky, freaky reggae before Ursula 1000 steps up to the tables. All at once accessible and obscure, Ursula’s sets are full of music that could get the stodgiest record store employee and his grandma on the dance floor at the same time. The fFormula, Kamoni, and Alonzo from the Machine Punk crew take it into the late late night, rocking live PAs of all-be-damned bangers til the sun comes up. The Jah Breaker rounds out the lineup with the classics. What’s New Year’s without a little No Half Steppin’?
