The Consulate General of Spain in New York presents a celebration of the 1812 Spanish Constitution, loosely known as La Pepa, at the Queen Sophia Spanish Institute, 684 Park Avenue, NYC on October 23, 2012. Doors open at 6pm with a panel discussion beginning at 6:15pm, followed by a concert at 8pm and cocktails at 8:30pm. To attend, RSVP by email [email protected].

The panel discussion will feature Eduardo Garrigues, writer, historian and Consul General of Spain in Puerto Rico; Gabriel Paquette, Assistant Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University; Janis Tomlinson, Director of Museums at the University of Delaware; and be moderated by playwright Inigo Ramirez de Haro. The panelists will discuss the 1812 Spanish Constitution, La Pepa, as the starting point of the difficult relationship between Liberals and Absolutists in Spain, and the life of the painter Francisco de Goya as an example of these political divisions of the time. The panel will also explore the relationship of this historical document with the French, American and Latin American Constitutions.

Following the panel discussion, Rafael Lamas will introduce and conduct a musical repertory that will explore the music of the time and some of the topics discussed during the panel. For more information visit www.spainculturenewyork.com.
