Gary Marker is Professor of History at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. An authority on the history of Russian printing and reading, he is the author of Days of a Russian Noblewoman:The Memories of Anna Labzina; Publishing, Printing and the Origins of Intellectual Life in Russia, 1700?1800; and Reinterpreting Russian History: Readings, 860?1860s. He is currently completing a study of literacy and reading in eighteenth-century Russia.
