ACCESS DENIED

Trapped in red tape at United States immigration, reggae sensation Eek-A-Mouse is taking his electric live show a few miles south to Tijuana, MX.

He is just one of many artists being refused entry to the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001 when immigration officials tightened their belts and started denying access to foreign dance companies, musicians, and actors, among others.

As an organization dedicated to support artists, the WorldBeat Cultural Center is proud to team up with 91X Reggae Makossa to present this rare opportunity for Eek?s Southern Californian fans to see him perform. Proceeds from the event will go towards helping Eek-A-Mouse?s struggle with the immigration department so that he can continue touring throughout the States.

This all-ages event features some of reggae?s brightest young stars like Joseph Israel, who will be teaming up with Matisyahu in June, Elijah Emanuel and the Revelations, who hail from Panama, and Tijuana?s very own Esencia. The night will be chock-full of explosive musical performances that can?t be missed.

ARTIST BIOS

Eek-A-Mouse
Ludicrous, bizarre, and uniquely original, few DJs have made a bigger splash in the dancehall scene than Eek-A-Mouse. He is a household name in Jamaica for good reason: he invented a whole new vocal style, sing-jay, which fused singing and deejaying (known as ?toasting?).

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, his musical career began in the mid 1970s when his college math teacher produced his first two releases. Despite his humble beginnings, it was not long before Eek-A-Mouse exploded on the scene with his single, ?Wah Do Dem? in 1980.

This musical phenom has kept busy since then, releasing albums, touring extensively, and making frequent appearances at the Jamaican music festival, Reggae Sunsplash.

Joseph Israel
Originally from Oklahoma, Joseph Israel could not deny that he felt a mystical identity to Jamaica, it?s people, and their music.

Influenced by Bob Marley and the Rastafarian way of life, Joseph Israel took his first trip to Jamaica at the age of 14. In his youth, he traveled seven more times to the island, counseling with Rasta elders such as Ras Bee-Bow of Negril and Bongo Hu-I, the great teacher and herbalist of Montego Bay. As the Rasta philosophy took root in Joseph, so did long dreadlocks.

Back home he became a leading influence among young musicians and formed a band called ?Root Kind?. Joseph was so inspired by creating music, that he organized funding through his school to record at a professional studio.

Joseph went on to develop quite a following with the releases of his album, ?Gone Are the Days,? and the hit single, ?Ruff Times,? which was a collaboration with Luciano. His fan base has spread from Jamaica to across the United States and he has toured from coast to coast.

Elijah Emanuel and the Revelations

Elijah Emanuel has evolved through several incarnations of The Revelations since 1996. The present line-up of musicians lives in San Diego, California. Having a first-hand view of the struggle of the local immigrants against the U.S. government fueled Elijah Emanuel's imagination for addressing Roots Reggae music to concrete issues. Bilingual in Spanish and English, he has been an activist for Hispanic and African cultural integrity. Elijah has been

searching for the essence of reggae; what makes it timeless and universal---and attempting to make that the core of his songs.
