More info: The Imperial War Museum North is teaming up with the University of Salford to hold a special series of public talks marking the 70th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill becoming Prime Minister.

The first talk will be delivered by Nick Hewitt from the Imperial War Museum on Sunday, 2 May. He will explain the extent of the damage inflicted on the German Navy in the conquest of Norway during the spring of 1940, and how it constrained German maritime options such as the potential invasion of Britain.

On Sunday, 9 May author and former Royal Navy Officer, Graham Rhys-Jones, will discuss Churchill's relationship with the Norwegian campaign - a failure with which he was closely implicated but brought him to the top of the political world.

Sunday, 16 May will see John Charmley, author and Professor of History at the University of East Anglia, give his perspective on Churchill's entry to Number 10 Downing Street, the manoeuvres that led to it and the results.

The final talk on Sunday 23, May will give a German perspective on the first strategic problem to assail Churchill as Prime Minister. Karl-Heinz Frieser, author and former German Army colonel, will explore Hitler's decision to stop the German advance outside Dunkirk which in turn allowed the Allies to escape.
