Join LTRC at the Cartoon Museum to enjoy the art of Private Eye as the magazine celebrates it;’s 45th birthday.

On 25th October 1961 Vol 1 No. 1 of Private Eye was launched on an unsuspecting British public. The magazine was the creation of Richard Ingrams, Peter Usborne, Willie Rushton, Christopher Booker and a few others, and the small yellow pamphlet and other early issues were carefully cut and pasted together in Rushton’s bedroom at 28 Scarsdale Villas in Kensington.
From an initial run in the low hundreds – some say 300, some 500 – in October 1961, Private Eye’s sales have risen to over 200,000. 2006 also marks 20 years since Ian Hislop took over as editor. Hislop selects all the cartoons that go into the magazine and regards it as his favourite editorial job. Cartoons have always been central to the magazine and Hislop observes.

“The Private Eye at 45” exhibition includes over 130 cartoons from the last 45 years of the magazine by over 50 cartoonists including some of the best known names in the business – Ronald Searle, Gerald Scarfe, Ralph Steadman, Michael Heath, John Kent, Carl Giles, Fluck and Law, Steve Bell, Tony Husband, Nick Newman, Ken Pyne and many others. There are illustrations from regular features and strips such as Pseuds Corner, St. Albion Parish News, Barry McKenzie, The Secret Diary of John Major, Hom Sap, Celeb/ and many others. It also includes specially commissioned cartoons by Michael Heath and Nick Newman and unpublished works by Gerald Scarfe and George Adamson.
