Beautiful dancers, exotic costumes and the compelling sounds of Brazilian samba and Cuban rumba and son. With all new dances and special guests this year, this show was performed in 2003 to sold out audiences. Jose Carrion is a principal dancer of Ballet Folklorico Cutumba from Cuba that is undoubtedly the most vibrant and spectacular of the national Cuban folkloric companies. Based in Santiago de Cuba in the tropical eastern seaboard of the island, Cutumba performs energetic and athletic Afro-Cuban folkloric and sensuous Cuban traditional dance, music and song ranging from African Gaga to traditional Cuban son. Jose?s dances will be accompanied by a Seattle based folkloric music ensemble led by drummer Matt Dressler. Accompanying the Brazilian performance will be Brazilian band Batuque. This band is a mix of Brazilian, American and Japanese musicians that always brings Seattle audiences to their feet to dance. The choreographer Janelle Keane Campoverde presents the cast of dancers, Gira Sol, performing folkloric and popular dances of Brazil, including samba, samba reggae, maracatu and bai?o. Special guests include vocalist & percussionist Samia Panni and Brazilian dancer & percussionist Pacifico.
