In 1976, Artur Rubloff, developer of Evergreen Plaza (one of the first shopping malls of its kind in the country) and one of the original supporters of the Beverly Arts Center, decided to honor his good friends Alice and Arthur Baer by establishing an art competition in their name. The Baers were recognized patrons of the arts and instrumental in helping realize the dream of a community art center for Beverly/morgan Park. they were two of the founders of the BAc, and the art center's original theater also carries their name. Rubloff also wanted to encourage Chicago area artists by providing them with a prestigious venue and endowed the competition with an annual $5,000 in prize money. 25 years ago, such lavish money was almost unheard of in the Chicago area, with most prizes in the $50 - $100 range. Many local artists credit the Baer Competition for raising the ante in other competitions. Today, funding for this important competition continues thanks to the generosity and community spirit of the Evergreen Plaza Associates and Mr. Bruce Provo Group.
