6135, Seaview Ave NW
Seattle, Washington 98107

As the nation's top producer of cultivated oysters, Seattle is dubbed "Oyster Capital of the World" and celebrates with an annual fundraiser on Oyster Day. This great day features the epic Oyster Olympics, which means plenty of slipping and sliding and some good old "Oystertainment", while punters enjoy eating some 30,000 succulent shellfish.

The Oyster Olympics features local celebs nobly slurping through piled-high plates of oysters using no hands, as well as a world-class shucking competition. The "Oystertainment," first held in 1990, consists of art exhibitions, an oyster-themed fashion show, comedy, magic, live music, drink, chefs competing for tastiest-oyster dishes and, of course, the consuming of heaps and heaps of oysters.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and, with only around 600 available, they always sell out quickly. It's all in a good cause, with US$38,000 raised in 2005 for the good work of the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, to protect, preserve and enhance the water quality of the region. Lying in the clean waters of Puget Sound, Washington State claims to be one of the few places in the world that still enjoys excellent shellfish-growing conditions.
