12th Anniversary Black History Essay Contest Announced
For Henderson County 3rd and 7th Graders
Essays due in by February 18th, Awards Ceremony February 27th, 2009

Details for the12th Annual Black History Essay Contest sponsored by Narnia Studios of Hendersonville have been announced. “As we are about to celebrate the historic inauguration of our nation's first African American President, it is hard to believe it’s been 12 years since the very first contest. Our first essay writers are now in college! We are excited about the upcoming 12th anniversary essay contest for Henderson County’s third and seventh graders,” said Barbara Hughes, owner of Narnia Studios.
“Each year the quality as well as the quantity of essays increases as teachers make it part of their Black History Month focus for their students.”
The purpose of the essay contest is to foster in the student a desire to learn about the invaluable contributions African Americans have made to help make this the great country that it is, according to Hughes. “I felt this would be a culturally enriching and rewarding experience for every student that enters. The judges and I certainly learn new information each year.”

The essays are to be written about an African American who is an historical figure, a celebrity or someone the student knows personally. They must be 250 words or less. The essays must be received at Narnia Studios, 315 N. Main Street, by 5:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 18th. The awards ceremony for the winners will be held at 4:00 P.M., Friday, February 27th. There will be three winners from each grade level. . This contest is open to all 3rd and 7th grade students in Henderson County public schools, private schools and home schools. Every 3rd and 7th grade teacher receives a personal notification.
